Colonoscopy Prep: Planning Ahead

Simply download the colonoscopy prep instructions that your colorectal specialist prescribes. Here are a few general tips to help you get ready for your procedure:

  • Shop for supplies. Pick up plenty of Gatorade, G2, Popsicles, Jell-O, or Italian ice, chicken or beef broth is an option if you would like.
  • Clear your schedule. Once you start the bowel prep, you will not be straying far from the restroom.
  • Drink your prep solution according to prep instructions provided. These prep concoctions have gotten better through the years, but they will never be as good as drinking your favorite beverage. Sucking on a slice of lemon or a hard candy afterward helps.
  • Wear loose, easy-fitting clothing. Choosing comfortable clothing will help you relax.

What to Expect the Day of Your Colonoscopy

Make preparations for someone to drive you to and from your procedure. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. Bring a list of all current medications. You will meet briefly with your colorectal specialist and other members of the healthcare team. The procedure will begin the moment you undergo anesthesia.

What To Expect After the Procedure

Once the colonoscopy procedure is complete, you may experience a bit of grogginess. For your safety, you should avoid driving until the following day. Make arrangements for someone to pick you up and drive you home. If needed, we are able to provide contact information for professional driver services that may be able to assist you.
